★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This monument stands in tribute to Marie-Christine de Lalaing, the wife of the governor of Tournai during the Dutch Revolt of the Eighty Year’s War. She is noted for leading the defence of the city in her husband's absence.
The monument is located in the centre of Grand Place of Tournai and depicts Marie-Christine de Lalaing during the revolt. She is shown wearing full plate armour. Her left arm is raised gesturing forward, while she holds a small battle-axe in her right hand.
An unusually masculine depiction of a woman, even in war. A nice monument and reminds me a little of Joan of Arc.
