Although it is a bit far from the station, you can enjoy the cityscape. Just a short walk from the square you can see the castle from the bridge.

Nice depiction of the characters created by Jean Legrand referring to the local folklore.

Very nice bronze, well located next to La Bourse, to see if you are in the area.

Great cuties. As soon as I got home, I looked for information about them. And, of course, Belgium's favorite comics are involved.

They are two bronze statues , in the company of an ordinary and a snail . They are a tribute to their spiritual father Jean Legrand from Namur. The nickname of the inhabitants of Namur is " the snails " . They don't rush anything. They are on the Place d'Armes.

If I have to go by what locals say, the people of Namur as so lazy and so slow, that, Djoseph (Joe) and Françwès (Frank) need to put a leash & cage on their snails, while they negotiate, so it doesn't run away! Well.... You need to visit the city for yourself and find out how fast or slow the people are. I'm not going to comment on that! Haha.

This interesting sculpture is in Namur's Place d'Armes. It was created by the Belgian artist Suzanne Godard based on the cartoon characters, the inseparable friends Françwès et Djoseph, popularized in the local newspaper "Vers l'Avenir" in the mid 1900's by the painter and caricaturist Jean Legrand. Françwès and Djoseph epitomise the laid-back attitude of the Namur people - les Chwès - whose main concerns are the weather and watching the boats go by. The snail is the proud symbol of the city and the snails in the sculpture are respectively caged and tethered - just in case they should try to do a runner: HA! Note that the larger snail's leash is actually attached to its own shell.
