★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This monument stands in tribute to Baldwin, the Count of Flanders and Hainaut, who became the Emperor of the Latin Empire after defeating the Byzantine Empire during the Fourth Crusade.
The monument is an equestrian sculpture of Baldwin as the Latin Emperor. In his right hand he holds the imperial sceptre, while holding on to the reins of the horse with his left. There's a sense of motion about the sculpture with the horse appearing to be coming to a sudden halt as Baldwin pulls back on the reins. The sculpture is exceptionally detailed, from the straining muscles of the horse, to the uniform the emperor is wearing. It's a bit of a detour from the main attractions of Mons, but definitely worth a detour if you have the time.
