A church remains a church .... I appreciate the calm and peace that you feel.If the walls could speak ...

The church of Saint-Nicolas in Enghien is a Gothic-style building from the 14th and 16th centuries. In a primitive oratory, mentioned at the beginning of the 12th century, a building was built under the patronage of St. Nicholas from 1328 to the end of the 14th century. In the 15th century, the transept, tower, nave and side naves and choir height were rebuilt. The church was then completely covered with fluted vaults. In the 17th century and at the request of the Duchess Anne de Croÿ, the south arm of the transept was converted into a Renaissance-style chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. The 18th century saw a neo-Gothic remodeling of the tower (architect J. Dumont) and the west façade (architects Verhaegen and Nève). The church, with an irregular Latin cross plan, consists of a nave, side naves, a protruding transept, a choir, annexes and a cross tower. The four-chambered nave is surrounded by three naves (one to the north and two to the south). The Sainte-Anne and Fonts chapels are grafted onto the second south aisle. The north aisle opens from a Brabant Gothic porch built by Jehan Inglebin between 1444 and 1459. The three-chambered choir ends with a five-sided apse. To the southeast, it is infused with a third chapel dedicated to Notre-Dame de Messines (15th century). The passage of the transept is surmounted by a neo-Gothic tower, consisting of an overlap of two gill registers. Consisting of an octagonal bell tower, the summit is surrounded by damped corner towers. Note the stained glass windows, baptismal font, and pulpit of truth, some made by Max Ingrand in the 20th century.

It's a church, but it's not amazing. The exterior is special, it looks like parts of the church have been put together at different times which gives it a particularly unsightly appearance. The interior is quite nice, but there is a lot of dust
