About Ruys Juweliers
Jean van der Haegen
“Back when I was 9 years old my grandfather(Raymond Ruys) died. I grew up with his stories and his dreams. He had a very clear vision about what jewels needed to be: “unique and personal. Not a jewel should be made twice, cause no feeling is the same.”
I wanted to keep this vision alive and when I grew older my passion for jewellery and art grew with me. The decision of becoming a jeweller was a choice by heart, created through my childhood.
Today I am a 69 years old man trying to mold your unique moment into a perfect piece of art. keeping the tradition of our jewellery store alive.”
Our story
You have to go back 5 generations and 184 years, to see the founder of the jewellery-store, Jacques Ruys, sitting on the benches of the Silversmithdivision of the Academy of Antwerp. Received Master in 1839, he holds at first a workshop in the family house of Sint-Jorispoort and the years of his wedding, in 1854, opens with his wife, the store at the street-side.
It is still with this silver baptistmal shell of 19cm made by the hands of Jacques Ruys, that children are baptized in the marvelous Cathedral of Antwerp.
Their elder son, Albert Ruys, takes over the store in 1885, the year of his wedding with JosΓ©phine Ramboux, daughter of another jewellers’ family of Antwerp. Together the couple is going to develop the business and extend the store to both houses adjacent to the family house. In 1902 they rebuilt them. Even today the building is preserved in this authentic state. The magnificent drawings, remaining from this period, of the romantic jewels of the ‘Belle Epoque’ are realised by the house for rich traders and industrialists of the city. Such a jewel was recently discovered in Canada and qcquired as a major item by the Antwerp Diamondmuseum.
Raymond Ruys, son of the couple, takes over the store in 1919. Very beautiful creations of Art Deco style will be realized by him. both in jewellery and silver items. Today they make the name Ruys known by connoisseurs far beyond our borders.
Raymond Ruys designed this vase for the World Expo in 1930, inspired on African culturs
Since 1956, his son Robert and later his grandson Jean managed to maintain in Antwerp. With the magnificent store, a historic place where many beautiful pieces of jewellery are made up till now.
Today Jewellery Ruys is a place where tradition lives on. 5 generations in jewellery giving the best of themselves to help there clients to find the right jewel. Our passion for jewelry and diamonds is found in the quality we seek. We believe excellence is in the details. So come and visit us in our beautiful art deco shop. We’ll share our knowledge so you can find the perfect jewel for your budget.

Super satisfied with the service and the workmanship. Here, together with the owner Jean, designed an engagement ring and had it made. A top experience. From choosing the diamond to having the ring engraved by hand, everything went smoothly. The whole process took several weeks and the communication was always fast and clear. Moreover, I received a very fair price. Those looking for an engagement or wedding ring cannot find better.

Have a diamond ring estimated and forget to mention the carat weight of the diamonds.
Called the jeweler. The jeweler says I should come back now.
Can he receive again for sure.
Not really friendly either.

β β β β β I flew to the other side of the world to buy an engagement ring from Ruys.
More than 16,500km from Melbourne, Australia, to Antwerp, Belgium.
And I truly believe there is no other jeweller in between that would have worked as hard to make my fiance's perfect ring a reality under unusual and challenging circumstances.
First of all, Jean the owner, was on holiday the week my fiance and I planned to be in Belgium. His store, like many of Antwerp's jewellers was closed for the week around Assumption Day, but he agreed to an appointment anyway.
And he did so knowing he would have less than five days (including a weekend) from our initial appointment to confirm the style of ring, the stone to go with it and to deliver the finished product before we made our return trip to Australia.
Second, he agreed to all this knowing I hadn't proposed yet and that my early suggestions for the ring design and stone shapes could change once my fiance became involved.
And the ring did change. Dramatically.
For starters, my partner wanted a coloured stone - but didn't know exactly what kind. Just that it had to be blue or green, or a combination of pink and yellow.
Second, while almost all the rings she owned prior to the engagement were solitaire settings, she wanted a three stone arrangement for the engagement ring.
Many emails later, but in the less than four days between my proposal and my appointment with Jean, he was able to source a series of gorgeous and very unusual gemstones that fit the brief. Two Watermellon tourmalines - a pink colour that slowly changes to yellow-green, a green tourmaline and a natural zircon that was blue or green depending which way you looked at it.
By the time we arrived in Antwerp the perfect ring was ready, and we just had to choose the right stone.
It's worth noting again that again, as this was a holiday week, no local gem dealers were available. So Jean had obtained his stones from Germany at no cost to us - something only a jeweller with an exceptional reputation and extensive experience could achieve.
Rather than just present the stones, he also ensured all of them were cut in such a way that they would be hardy enough for daily wear.
An irridiscent, green tourmaline was the perfect choice in the end - and far under what I had initially indicated the budget for the ring would be.
Despite the lower value, Jean's efforts continued as he made arrangements to have the stone set and the ring resized ahead of our departure from Europe.
With the consultation over he offered some tourist advice, posed for a selfie with us and sent us into Antwerp's beautiful old town. He also talked us through how to reclaim a VAT refund (worth several hundred Euros for those who live outside the EU).
When we returned to collect the ring, it was perfect.
The quaint art deco Ruys store in Antwerp has a lot of rare and beautiful jewelry inside it.
But despite all the diamonds, gold and precious stones, the most priceless gem is Jean. His expertise, professionalism and enthusiasm is invaluable. His wonderful sense of humour and easy to deal with nature is forever a part of our engagement, and a fantastic memory.

β β β β β Working with Jean was an absolute pleasure. I came to Ruys based on a recommendation from a friend and I couldn't have been happier. I was looking for an engagement ring for my girlfriend. My expectation for this experience was that it would be more transactional in nature, but Jean really took the time to understand what I was looking for. He showed me a large range of loose diamonds which I was able to inspect and evaluate in person before selecting one and putting it in a setting. I had a unique "wavy" shank design in mind and Jean helped me turn this idea into a vision and then a reality. His craftsman is very skilled and the ring came out amazingly well. So if you're looking for a ring, or just about any piece of jewelry, I would highly recommend visiting Ruys. Maybe you want something off the shelf or a custom design, they can cover all options. You'll also have a level of customer service that will be hard to find elsewhere. As an added bonus, the shop itself is a jewel - it's beautifully crafted in the early 20th century art nouveau style. Ring the bell and go inside!

β β β β β Jean is an exceptional Jeweler, 1st Class in every aspect. After hours of research and websites, to purchase a Diamond Solitaire, I made contact with Jean who responded quickly, with endless knowledge and advice, I booked an appointment. I was not disappointed! Jean sent me a list of diamonds of different colours, clarites, cuts and sizes, and not at the top end of my budget, which was refreshing. In fact, he encouraged me not to look at Diamond Certificates, and what is deemed as excellent, but instead showed me everything, with magnification and explanation. Sadly, for my Husband, I had an eye for the D colour diamonds, that was my personal choice and even though the different diamonds were mixed up, I was still drawn to this particular diamond. An excellent jeweler, excellent service, he simply can't be faulted. Thank you Jean, I will be back to see you in the near future.

β β β β β I had a wonderful experience buying a diamond ring from this jeweler last fall. We received a tour of the gorgeous showroom and learned the history of the company. The ring itself is exquisite - custom-made with diamonds set in yellow gold (even if white gold is customary in Antwerp). The price was very fair and the memory of my visit is itself priceless.
I have been wearing my ring with my wedding ring daily for the last 6+ months and am extremely happy with it. I hope to be a repeat customer in the future!
