S	S J on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Der Minervabrunnen, der auf dem "Place du Grand Sablon" ist ein testamentarisches Geschenk von Lord Thomas Bruce, 2. Earl of Ailesbury und 3. Earl of Elgin, zum Dank für die Gastfreundschaft, die er in Brüssel während seines Exils empfing. Der Sockel des Brunnens trägt auf seinen Seitenflächen zwei lateinische Inschriften. Der Erste ist in Anerkennung der angenehmen und heilsamen Gastfreundschaft ("Hospitio jucundo et salubri"). Die zweite Inschrift erwähnt, dass sein Erbe John Bruce,diese Vorkehrungen im Jahr 1751 durchführen ließ, als "der Friede auf der ganzen Erde gestärkt wurde". Die beiden Hauptflächen des Sockels sind mit dem Wappen des Earl of Ailesbury verziert. An ihrer Basis gießen jeweils zwei Spucker das Wasser in ein Becken, das von einer blauen Steintreppe getragen wird. Auf jeder Seite der Spuckmasken sind die ersten und die letzten drei Buchstaben des lateinischen Ausdrucks Fuimus ("Wir waren") eingraviert, das Motto der Familie Bruce, das daran erinnert, dass sie im 14. Jahrhundert Könige von Schottland waren. The Minerva fountain on the "Place du Grand Sablon" is a testamentary gift from Lord Thomas Bruce, 2nd Earl of Ailesbury and 3rd Earl of Elgin, as thanks for the hospitality he received in Brussels during his exile. The base of the fountain bears two Latin inscriptions on its side surfaces. The first is in recognition of the pleasant and healing hospitality ("Hospitio jucundo et salubri"). The second inscription mentions that his heir, John Bruce, made these arrangements in 1751, when "peace was strengthened all over the world". The two main surfaces of the base are decorated with the coat of arms of the Earl of Ailesbury. At their base, two spitters pour the water into a basin that is carried by a blue stone staircase. Engraved on each side of the spit masks are the first and last three letters of the Latin expression Fuimus ("We were"), the Bruce family motto, which reminds us that they were kings of Scotland in the 14th century.

Più che la fontana in sé, peraltro graziosa e dedicata a Minerva, è interessante la sua storia. Essa fu infatti costruita su disposizione testamentaria di un discendente del re scozzese Robert Bruce, reso celebre dal film Braveheart. Esiliato a Bruxelles nel '700, il nobile britannico volle ringraziare la città che gli offrì ottimo asilo e rifugio per ben 40 anni, sotto la protezione dell'imperatrice Maria Teresa d'Austria, allora sovrana dei "Paesi Bassi Spagnoli" (attuale Belgio) che erano parte dei possedimenti asburgici. BRAVEHEART IN BRUSSELS In the middle of the square of the Grand Sablon, in the lunar silence of a zombied city in times of covid, where the traditional cafes and bistros remain sadly closed and the few human beings still walking look at each other with suspicion from afar, you can admire this otherwise "invisible fountain" ". More than the fountain itself, which is pretty and dedicated to Minerva, its history is interesting. It was in fact built on the testamentary disposition of a descendant of the Scottish king Robert Bruce, made famous by the film Braveheart. Exiled to Brussels in the 18th century, the British nobleman wanted to thank the city that offered him excellent asylum and refuge for 40 years, under the protection of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, then ruler of the "Spanish Netherlands" (now Belgium) which were part of the Habsburg possessions.

m	macedonboy on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ An interesting fountain in the Place du Grand Sablon. At it’s centrepiece is a sculpture of Minerva. The sculpture depicts Minerva seat on a bench holding a shield while surrounded by cupids. On the shield is a relief portrait Emperor Franz I and Empress Maria-Theresa of Habsburg Austria, which at the time rule modern day Belgium as part of Austrian Netherlands. A striking sculpture, but not in the best condition as many of the finer details have been worn away by time. At least it also dispenses drinking water.
