The traditional fountain on the market square, built in 1719, is a landmark of Liège. The current name comes from the three bronze reliefs that were added in 1930, which are reminiscent of old Liège customs. Before 1930 it was called "Fontaine des Savetresses" because shoe sellers (French: "Savetiers") gathered around it on market days. It was originally used as the base for Mayor Bukman's statue until its removal in 1649. On the other side of the square was a cast iron twin, the pillory fountain (French: "Fontaine du Pilori"), the destruction of which was ordered by the city council in 1921 because of its poor condition.
