De bedoeling was om ontsnappingspogingen te beletten van spionnen naar Nederland en Engeland. Omgekeerd was het de bedoeling om mannen die naar het front wilden hier tegen te houden.
Wegens de coronacrisis werd de organisatie van het populaire TV programma Reizen Waes in 2020 verlegd van het verre buitenland naar originele bezienswaardigheden en toestanden in eigen land. Zo koos Tom ervoor om de aandacht te vestigen op de dodendraad in Wuustwezel in het prachtige natuurreservaat van De Maatjes. Zijn reportage heeft een geweldige boost gegeven aan het aantal bezoekers ter plaatse .
