β β β β β Devoxx Belgium 2018 was my first Devoxx and I must say it was a deception. On the positive side: some very interesting content, unfortunately, many points of improvement.
- Ryanair-style ticketing policy: due to a mistake in my original reservation, I had to pay 30+ euro or they would put "on hold" all the tickets of my company
- The place was overly packed. It took literally tens of minutes to switch from one room to the other. I would recommend to pick a more modest location and put the budget somewhere else
- I suspect some sponsored talks to be disguised as regular conferences.
- Mediocre lunches: 2 salad boxes and 2 sandwiches over the whole conference. Disgusting coffee. And why not having a simple water fountain?
- Sound engineers talking loudly on the intercom during conferences | one of the organizers standing at the entrance with full-volume talkie-walkie
- Exhibitions and rooms being shut down during the conference, I didn't feel welcome at all on Friday
Conclusion: Devoxx is a great conference, but only for the people staying at home watching the live streams.

β β β β β Best Java conference I've been to. Everybody who matters in development of the Java language itself is there. Plus loads of other famous speakers and developers on JVM based languages.
Next to that there are also nice tracks on topics like methodology, architecture and front-end.
I think I've attended it over 10 times now. Will be back next year.
Oh, and the venue is great as well. Nice, comfy movie theatre seats.

β β β β β Usually good speakers, but the venue and the infrastructure are below the familiar standards. No daylight, no sitting area in the coffee breaks, hence lunch on the floor. The worst coffee ever.
