In 1923, a military cemetery was opened in the fort, 1,200 French soldiers who fell during the fighting in August 1914 remain there.
Dinant was among the cities most affected by German atrocities in 1914.
On the night of 21-22 August, German cavalry, supported by machine guns, entered the undefended Saint-Jacques street and set fire to the houses. On 22 August, 2,500 civilians attempted to flee behind French lines and were met by French troops. Headquarters soon ordered a retreat.
On August 23, the Germans, suspecting that they were counting snipers in the population of Dinant, rounded up a large number of residents whom they shot. In this massacre, 674 men, women and children were shot and more than a thousand houses were burned. Some French companies are still constantly trying to defend Dinant 3.
Countless massacres and plunder by the Germans gave the Allies a moral advantage. Indeed, the concept of the "war of laws" played a central role in the US engagement in 1917.

Silent witnesses of a cruel time. Not as overwhelming as in the Westhoek... but of course every war grave is one too many.
