Cet Abbaye est très beau et très apaisant. Une bonne nature privé mais aussi publique. Tout porte au silence.
This Abbey is very beautiful and very calming. A good nature private but also public. Everything leads to silence.

A very beautiful, very peaceful and relaxing place. To tell the truth we think we find like Maredssous, but it is quite the opposite. Very beautiful forest where you can stroll to go from the abbey, to the Poteaupré establishment to taste or eat or see how beer is made

Chimay is one of 12 Trappist breweries in the world today, with perhaps the most international name recognition. The abbey of Notre-Dame de Scourmont was founded in 1850 by monks originally from the Westvleteren abbey (now also famous for its beers). The monks of Chimay have been making beer and cheese here for well over 100 years. Their old brewhouse consisted of traditional copper vessels, but in 1991 they upgraded to a larger modern stainless steel brewery. This allowed Chimay to expand, and today over half their volume is exported. If you visit, start at their main hospitality building called Espace Chimay. There is plenty of space for free parking in their lot, and outside is a playground for kids. The center of the two-story building has their gift shop which sells memorabilia, bottles and cheese. You can also purchase a tour to visit their small museum / interactive exhibits. The displays take you through the history of the abbey and brewery, and also describe the beer and cheese making processes. On the left side of the building is their restaurant. Here you can get a sampler flight of Chimay's four flagship beers, the best being the blue label Grand Reserve (9% abv). At the restaurant and bottle shop you can also find bottles of their barrel aged series of Grand Reserve. These achieve 10.5% abv, and pick up deliciously complex oaky flavors. My favorite was the Cognac Barrel Aged version, a perfect beer. The restaurant serves cheese boards, sandwiches and an offering of traditional dishes, many of which incorporate the Chimay beer. The restaurant has plenty of dining tables and there is a nice small walk-up wooden bar which is for the servers only. The staff is welcoming and polite, making for a nice family friendly dining experience. Above the restaurant on the 2nd story is their small hotel of 7 rooms. It is quite affordable and is a nice option if you desire to spend an evening enjoying the Chimay beers. The abbey and brewery are about a 15 minute walk from the visitors center. There is a dedicated path carved through the scenic woods, a nice stroll. The abbey has a central gatehouse with a small gift shop for books and religious memorabilia. You are welcome to stroll into the large abbey courtyard which has well maintained trees and greenery. Across the courtyard from the gatehouse is the building that houses the brewery. Unfortunately it is not visible to the public. Even so I recommend a visit. The multistory stone mason buildings are beautiful, and it is a tranquil place.

Such a shame you can’t get to see the beer and cheese being made. Limited access to the Abby, understandable but limits the experience. All of that said, beautiful and tranquil place, well worth a visit as long as your expectations don’t include a brewery tour.....
